Lake Tahoe – Smoky Images

Housewrighter - Lake Tahoe

A Ghostly Abyss

Lake Tahoe – Smoky Images is a 3 part photo essay on the duality of disaster. As is typically the case when I travel, I had to jettison my expectations within the first few minutes of arriving at a destination. The last time I visited Lake Tahoe was in 1999. I was under 30, recently rejected from a job in Rome I had wanted more than any other job before or since, and had just visited the Napa Valley for the first time. I lost my only black and white roll of film on that visit 15 years ago. [Read more...]

A Feral Humans Photo Shoot – Handley Rock

Housewrighter - Feral Humans

Feral Humans Dwelling in Local Cave

A Feral Humans Photo Shoot was not a choice. It was a duty to my species to capture these rare beings in their natural habitat. Travel photography need not shun the sensual in my opinion, and in my journey to the mystical Handley Rock, high in the hills above Redwood City, I found these two playful creatures frolicking among the recent hipster graffiti. One was called Dakotah, and the other Jason. These two souls, who sometimes masquerade among us, making coffee, were perhaps a bit shy at first, but their natural attraction to one another, and the bright lights, became quickly apparent. Why The World Cup Matters to Me

The Blissful Adventurer - iPhone and Puglia

I’ve watched plenty of World Cup in this Town

Why the World Cup matters to me, is something I have pondered for over a month as the big event drew nearer. This is my first World Cup since 1998 that I will not be in Europe for at least part of it. It was strange not watching yesterday’s USA-Ghana match in a place with a huge screen and raucous fans. I have seen matches in bars in Connemara Ireland, and along the Mosel in Trier, Germany. I have watched on ferries to Sardinia, the streets of Tuscany, and alone, in a big empty apartment, after a train ride from Switzerland. No matter the locale, rarely does a match fail to create a goose-bump inducing moment. [Read more...]

The Italy Rules

The Housewrighter- Italy Rules

The Gondolier

The Italy Rules are my set of guidelines for the first-time and infrequent Italy traveler. I have traveled to, lived, and worked in Italy frequently over the past 20 years. In this time I evolved from a curious tourist to hardened, salty, veteran of the trials, travails, and pitfalls, of one of the world’s most visited countries. One usually dreams of Italy for years before finally setting their foot into the proverbial boot. The dream usually crashes in much less time. This post is really for the traveler who has not been deep into the Amazon or climbed to base camps in Nepal. This post is for those of you who enjoy modern conveniences, large bathrooms, and the amenities of a comfortable Western life. For the most part, I am you. I love my big bed, my central heat and air, and my very fast wi-fi connection. However, Italy is reason enough for me forego these luxuries for a few weeks or months out of every year.

The Housewrighter est Arrivé

The Housewrighter - Point Lobos

Like a force of nature, here comes The Housewrighter

At long last, the site I have envisioned since 2010 is a reality. For those of you here from The Blissful Adventurer, thank you for your amazing support over the years. I hope you will enjoy this new iteration of my work and share once again in the comments and details of what I am posting.

What the hell is a Housewrighter? That is a great question. A friend of mine in San Francisco suggested that my previous site sounded like a new age retreat, and that I am far from new age. I agreed with him immediately, and set out to find a new name to better illustrate what I do. He mentioned that my surname carried a lot of weight, and that perhaps something incorporating it would be better for branding. While I generally despise marketing terms, I trusted him, and within a couple of days I had come up with this: [Read more...]

Our Work Chosen for Gallery Show!

The Blissful Adventurer - Our Work in Lights

Juliet’s Big Sur “Collision” was chosen! (all rights reserved)

In what was enormous good news around our camp, Juliet and I had images selected by a professional jury for the 3rd Annual Gallery NRC Mobile Phone Photography show in Denver Colorado. All images must have been taken and edited (preferably) with a mobile phone. As many of you know Juliet was in the show last year with this amazing shot of Venice. The show runs September 26, 2013 – October 19, 2013 and is free to the public. We will have framed images and prints for sale at the exhibition. We are fully committed to continuing our lives in this creative pursuit and one day hope to operate a gallery of our own.

Please enjoy viewing these images as we enjoyed capturing and editing them.

Cheers,

M&J

Hipstography and Hong Kong – They Love Me

Hipstography - The Blissful Adventurer

Hong Kong Cash

I was recently published in a very cool online magazine for Hipstamatic photographers called Hipstography. This gallery of 18 of my native Hipstamatic images from my journey to Hong Kong was a real honor. To date, this has been my most successful photography trip and I look forward to returning there soon. I encourage you all to check out Hipstography and give a shout out to its fabulous author, Eric Rozen (the blog is in English and French) While I have been noticeably absent from my blogging duties I have been quite fortunate with my photos lately as I will share in subsequent posts.

I appreciate very much all the support from fellow bloggers over the past 2 years and my art is starting to gain traction thanks largely to your encouragement and readership. Stay tuned :-)

Seeking the Good Life in Montalcino, Italy (my latest post on YLIAT)

The Blissful Adventurer - Montalcino

The View at Terralsole

Today, the wonderful Your Life is A Trip experiential travel site, posted my second piece for them, Finding Mario Bollag  about my first visit to the beautiful Terralsole winery in Montalcino, Italy. This piece, while short, tells the story of how Juliet and I made our way from Rome airport to the brilliance of Tuscany in a 5 and a half hour adventure.

In addition, we have a few slots remaining on our iPhone Journey to Puglia this October. I would love for some of my readers to join me in this amazing experience in Italy. The iPhone and Puglia – 8 Days and 7 Nights in the Gorgeous Heel of the Boot.
