When I sat down with Giusto to create this portrait I had not communicated precisely that I was choosing to illustrate him in this light. I had just visited The Tate Modern in London and was smitten by the Mark Rothko room there. For me, Rothko represents all the possibilities that exist in art. In Giusto’s wines I see all the possibilities and flavor combinations that stem from his imaginative use of amphorae. In this image I intend to juxtapose the imagination with the antiquarian. Rothko’s sensibilities and textures aligned with the frenetic genius of Giusto’s wines and his mind, all while using an ancient method to produce the wine.
