Shot with my industry standard drone, these kinds of images lend powerful context and visual delight to any winery website.
The twin forces of one of Sicily's most iconic wineries, Benanti. I am at home in this part of the world, perhaps more than any other place. It is my great dream to continue to come to Etna for many years.
The Horseshoe vineyard at Rhys sits at significant elevation in the Santa Cruz Mountains. They are one of my favorite producers and less than 45 minutes from my front door. Rhys produces some of the most compelling Pinot Noir and Syrah from California. I am working on a series of images from all of the seasons at Rhys. This was shot in late June. It was 58 degrees and foggy. Cool climate indeed.
This amazing scene jumped out at me when I was shooting the area for Wine Enthusiast Magazine.
Mario is a dear friend and perhaps one of the most underrated talents making wine in Brunello DOCG. His personality is as dynamic as his wines and is fully on display in this image I shot in April.
I have long held a passion for the wines of Piemonte and a love for the great Nebbiolo grape. This morning drive was a gift in that I got to have this amazing scene unfold in front of me, and was so grateful to be in this place celebrating my wife’s bday with some of the most beautiful vines on earth.
The true gentleman, Mario Piccini was a joy to work with and a pleasure to chat with about life in Toscana. His newest wine brought an immediate smile to my face, and his playful nature for portraits was an unexpected surprise. I really hope to work with him again soon.
These images, from my commissioned journey through France with Charles Neal are what some people wait an entire career to create. Charles not only taught me the ins and outs of these producers, but showed great hospitality and friendship in this process
These two images of winemaker Roberto Ceraudo were inspirations from recent study of Dutch Master Paintings and my idea to create a little artifice that represents the deeper realm from which this man creates his beautiful wines in Calabria
This little wine print of my beloved Due Santi Rosso is an homage to the great street artist Banksy. I am guessing he would enjoy this beautiful little wine from Rome.
This image, commissioned by Wine Enthusiast magazine but not used in print, is a collaboration from Federico Giuntini, the Museo di Chianti Rufina, and inspired by one of my heroes, the great Italian master Caravaggio. I hope all of these factors are present in your viewing of the image.
When I sat down with Giusto to create this portrait I had not communicated precisely that I was choosing to illustrate him in this light. I had just visited The Tate Modern in London and was smitten by the Mark Rothko room there. For me, Rothko represents all the possibilities that exist in art. In Giusto’s wines I see all the possibilities and flavor combinations that stem from his imaginative use of amphorae. In this image I intend to juxtapose the imagination with the antiquarian. Rothko’s sensibilities and textures aligned with the frenetic genius of Giusto’s wines and his mind, all while using an ancient method to produce the wine.
Fog is an element that nourishes the vineyards in our very dry climate here in Northern California. It also adds tremendous depth to photos. I photographed this while doing a shoot for Nicora Winery and Purely Domestic Wine Report
This sweeping sunrise image was featured as a 2 page spread in the June edition of Wine Enthusiast Magazine. It will be a very large print in my upcoming gallery show this fall.
One of the great gentlemen of Tuscany and perhaps the best winemaker in Chianti, the great Federico Giuntini sits among his many thousands of bottles of Chianti which are resting and improving in perfect conditions.
Perhaps the most driven and accomplished winemaker I have had the pleasure of photographing. Bibiana makes extraordinary wine, but her story is far more interesting than that. I photographed Bibiana for the cover of Purely Domestic WIne Report.
John Alban is a pioneer in the cultivation and production of Rhone varieties in California. He is also an intelligent man with a kind heart. It was a joy to photograph him for Wine Enthusiast Magazine
An incredible site in the SW of France. This family estate has deep roots going back to kings and relatives of kings. The armagnac is brilliant, and the light here is all natural.
I had the great pleasure of shooting here for Wine Enthusiast. I was not happy with the pissing rain at first, but getting this shot when huddled under a small umbrella is a great story. The vineyard looks amazing in this light.
