Big Sur Sea Explosion

Sea Explosion

Big Sur Sea Explosion is the first image in my series of shots from a long weekend of exploration along the Pacific Coast from Monterey down to Big Sur. This wave caught along the drive through Point Lobos was over 15 feet in height when it crashed against this rock. The spray from the wave actually misted down upon me and the camera some 50+ feet from the image.

While the weather was not idea through the entire weekend I did manage to capture some strong images including this one which may be the best surf shot I have ever taken. This image was shot RAW on my Nikon D7000 using my 18-205 Nikkor Zoom lens. I processed the image on Snapseed and Lightroom. I urge you to click to see the image here full-size.

Happy Thursday Blissful Adventurers and welcome to Big Sur.

Point Reyes Images #1

Tomales Point above the Pacific

Point Reyes Images is a series of shots from my recent exploration of one of the most remote and beautiful parts of the Pacific coast of California. The allure of Point Reyes comes from its isolation, gorgeous waters, access to roadside oysters, and surprising to me, its wildlife.

I captured this first image of the Pacific on a typically easy hike along the trail of Tomales Point. Tomales Bay is the bit of inlet water where some of the finest oysters in America are harvested on a daily basis during the season. I enjoy very much the succession of coves each with their own patterns of sea break and craggy rocks.

Tomorrow's image  - a hidden Point Reyes beach.

Here is a reminder of my upcoming instructional workshop for iPhone photography.

The iPhone and Creative Imaging Workshop -The iPhone and Creative Imaging is a 2 day workshop April 13 and 14, 2013 in San Francisco hosted by Michael Housewright and conducted by the extraordinary Sam Krisch. Santa Cruz to Capitola - The Escape

Election season....say it out loud and feel the nausea. I took a class in college on the Lincoln-Douglas debates; an entire class. I cannot watch the gory orchestrations of professional wrestling cast upon us these evenings. The intense efforts made to marginalize, disparage, and fictionalize the plight of our nation would have forced Lincoln to have pulled the trigger on himself.

In lieu of any further histrionics I give you images of a Sunday in Santa Cruz and Capitola, California. The sea calls folks, and I must answer.

Monterey Bay is one of the most fertile living parts of the sea in America. Life along it is not bad either. On any beach any day on Monterey Bay there are loads of sea weed and kelp sharing the sun with beach goers and the salty air. The Boardwalk amusement area in the background is California's oldest continuously operated.

The sky was so deeply blue on this day.

This guy, known as hop-along posed for over a minute until he was satisfied with my image.

The playful sea lions sunning on a dock. Juliet and I are big fans of these barking creatures with huge personalities.

It was just an impeccable breezy day this day and from here we moved over to Capitola, CA and its beach to see some surfing.
