The Road to El Dorado - Images or Dreams?

On the road to El Dorado

I saw myself crumbling

like the shards of slate-stone

and each making tread

more treacherous

Lemony fields revealed

to be much closer to

the rest of the plants

yet none with transmogrifying

effects

I sat in the shade of my own ego

just long enough to regain

my strength to justify

the reason for this road trip

on two feet

and as I approached the canyon

opened itself to me

like some coiled layer

of feminine sensibility

ready to assume a new

position

the palpable moisture

from the canyon floor

and the openness of the

flow invited me deeper

into the walk or maybe it was by then

a dance

thrusting the hips of rock upwards

till the meeting of stone and water

carved shapes in the backs of beasts

never wanting to relent

but

the water

always wins

and El Dorado gave way

to a lucid image

of myself I simply could not stand

so I watched the dream

end with the same emotion

I watched it

begin

Italy Images - This is Why I am Blissful

A ray of light on the wall of the Pantheon. In this greatest functioning example of ancient architecture I am always amazed that the renaissance genius Raphael is entombed here.

An afternoon storm brews over the mysterious Matera in the Italian state of Basilicata. If you think you know Italy yet have never been south of Rome, it is time you live up to your high praise of yourself.

The stunning Castel del Monte is one of the most unusual monuments in that it appears from nowhere along a gorgeous plateau in the highly underrated region of Puglia, Italy. This is very likely the cover to my first book

Sunset over Naples on the only day I ever spent there. It was the most fascinating and living city I have been in Europe. I will return to Napoli again soon.

Morning fog over Canale in Piedmont, Italy. The fog Nebbia lends its name to the signature grapes grown in this king of Italian wine country Nebbiolo. This is also a region visited by few yet so far beyond the quality scope in food and wine it is hard to fathom.

So, here is my shot of Tuscany :-) The genius gregarious winemaker Mario Bollag pouring a tank sample of his 2006 Brunello di Montalcino.

I adore my adopted 2nd home country as much as I love waking up each day. There are many who write about Italy. I live it as the great poets did. There is a spirit in this land that belongs to the auspices of the cosmos and no single people can possibly offer more than careful stewardship of where life simply is.

Sorry there are no links here to my subjects. Feel free to ask me any questions. I am drunk with memory and must rest.

Ci vediamo tutti

M

Haiku Sunday - A Collaboration of Photos and Words

So much madness

in the streets of life and only

so little solace

(Photo by Juliet Housewright from her upcoming blog SCHMEE JOURNEYS)

Lace curtains could never

recover from what they have seen

them do to each other

Photo by Mike Fiveson - photographer and author of the exceptional blog -

Mike's Look at Life  - Mike's work and talent inspire my work each day. Follow Mike's journey through life's doorways and be ennobled.

The day was opaque

before he burrowed through the pillow

to find her sleeping

In the most banal

of images there is a story

hiding inside us

they called him king Arthur

because he was the bravest wasp

and broke the glass prison

he left his pants on

the stairs as they loved in the

doorway and the floor

confessions of a priest

often fall on the ears of

a faceless image

he always played close

to home but once he left the confines

discovering it was lies

For Cara today

he thought as he drew color

from the image here

Blue blue blue blue blue

he whistled as he pushed the levers left

leaving only the blue

The Heart - A Vast and Lonely Enterprise

Tonight is a memory I want to replace

with Haiku so lonely it shakes

me to my foundation

I am more than the sum

of parts heaved across tables

and cut into mixes that augment

only the foolish and the damned

I seek I suppose and for this

I am punished and perhaps I should be

Perhaps it is so whimsical to talk of miss

and biology is certainly not to be

discounted

There is simply no joy in sharing

no passion in parts

Needing more than I can be as

distance convinces is weakness

of spirit and diminishes the capacity

for joy

I am not sure this was ever about joy

nor the transitory nature of hope

Tonight it is simply about alone

and familiar enough I can live with

that

NOVO Coffee – Photos by Juliet Housewright

I took Juliet for her very first coffee cupping yesterday at Denver's NOVO Coffee. This is a wonderful process by which roasters hone the flavors in their beans and a wonderful way to fully understand the flavor complexities in great coffee.

As it turns out Juliet always gifted with an eye for beauty and interest was able to capture some fine photos on the tour of the roaster while learning to cup like a pro.

This very cool machine gently and evenly roasts 60 pounds of raw beans in 11-15 minutes and returns them to room temp in only 3.

This is indeed the fruit of the coffee tree which is quite vibrant before being harvested.

This is where the research takes place. 4 types of beans all from different countries tasted side by side to assess their quality, aromas, and flavor profiles. This appeals greatly to us wine geeks.

Of course, Erich (the genius roaster at NOVO) made us all killer espresso drinks after the class.

Like this one :-)

I will be posting a much more detailed piece on NOVO Coffee this week. I just wanted to whet your appetites for a little Java this Saturday and show off my wife's camera skills.

Like this stunning shot of leaves and sky she saw and snapped as she was getting into the car to leave. Juliet is always inspired by caffeine.
